Africa

Africa

Below you will find narratives about people coming to California from Africa.  We hope you enjoy these narratives.  As you read them, please consider how these narratives subvert anti-immigrant narratives that are widespread in our society today.

This interview of Asmeret Yemane Kifle was conducted on the 18th of September by Bese Andemariam and Jerome Davis, 9th graders at Oakland Technical High School.  The interview took place at Bese´s house. Asmeret, BeseÅ› Aunt, was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and moved to California in 1993. She came to get a better life and future for herself. Once in California, she graduated from Cal State East Bay and became an accountant. This narrative subverts the stereotypes that immigrants don't work and are lazy  because she came here at a young age and unknown family to support her and she became a hard-working and successful person.
